The Teachable Moment:

Olweus Bullying Prevention

Individual Interventions

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program involves every student and every staff member, as well as parents and community members, each day and each moment of each day for the entire year, year after year. Adults in the school community have the responsibility to model appropriate behavior and treatment of others at all times and to intervene consistently and immediately in all bullying situations.

The Teachable Moment:

Stop the Bullying

Support the Victim

Name the Behavior

Refer to the School Rules Against Bullying

Impose Immediate Consequences

Empower Bystanders

Respond to all student reports of bullying with investigation and consequences (if appropriate)

Follow a consistent consequence plan with the student who bullied. Communicate with colleagues to ensure that consequences are effective and escalating. Reflection should be structured into all consequences. Reflective questions include: What did you do? Why did you do it? Why was that the wrong thing to do? What problem were you trying to solve? Who did you hurt? How could you tell he/she was hurt? What will you do next time? What can you do right now to make this situation better (avoid quick apologies)?

Provide follow-up support to the child who was bullied. Support may include a problem-solving meeting to deter future bullying and to empower the child who was targeted. Follow-up support can also be provided with simple check-ins and availability to ‘talk’.
