Bullying/Violence Incident Procedure
Student Rights:
Students have the right to learn in a safe and positive environment.
Students have the right to be treated with respect and dignity.
Students have the right to learn in an environment free from intimidation, harassment,
and humiliation.
Definition:
Bullying/ Harassing Behavior– Deliberate behavior in which someone uses his/her power to hurt or humiliate others. There are three types of bullying/harassing behaviors:
1) Physical Bullying/Harassment – Harm or threat to harm another’s body or property
Examples – fighting, sexual harassment (physical), intimidation, outnumbering, using size advantage, yelling to overpower, making physical threats, pushing, shoving, disregard for personal property, destruction of property, etc.
2) Emotional Bullying/Harassment– Harm to another’s self-worth
Examples – sexual harassment (verbal), humiliation, name calling, taunting, teasing, ridicule, slandering, starting rumors, deliberately setting someone up to get him/her in trouble, etc.
3) Social Bullying/Harassment – Harm to group acceptance
Examples – excluding, ignoring, manipulation of friendships, ganging up, etc.
Confronting Bullying Behaviors:
· Encourage the victim to directly and assertively ask the aggressor to stop (only for minor incidents).
· Bullying should be reported every time there is an immediate danger or the problem is on-going.
· School personnel must reinforce that bullying behaviors will not be tolerated.
· Students should be encouraged to report the situation to the adult in charge – recess duty, classroom teacher, coach, etc.
· Students should be encouraged to go to the principal if the bullying behavior is ignored or continues after reporting to the adult in charge of the activities.
