People for Human Rights of Sheridan County

People for Human Rights of Sheridan County (PHR) was formed in 1994 with the goals of creating access, acceptance, and support for all people in the community. The organization has provided speakers for local organizations, educational institutions, and the public on issues relating to racial equality, diversity, and tolerance; it hosted the Anne Frank Story Project in l998 (funded by the Scott Foundation, Wyoming Council for the Humanities, Wyoming Arts Council, and many local organizations and individuals); and it provided local public schools with consultations, books, films and other curriculum materials on racial and ethnic diversity.

In 1998, the Wyoming Community Foundation gave PHR an award for its community collaboration on the Anne Frank Story Project. Shortly after, PHR also received the James Reeb Award given each year to a Wyoming organization that acts against discrimination.

Since 1997 PHR and School Districts One and Two administrators and teachers have cooperated in assessing the climate for diversity in the schools. In December 2002, PHR funded and hosted a one-day invitational seminar with a regional expert on school safety for school staff and community leaders. The Safety in the Schools Bullying Prevention Program is the outgrowth of the work begun at that seminar.
