We are the
Steering Committee of the Sheridan County Bullying Prevention Program, a
working group of the community-based People for Human Rights of Sheridan County. The People for Human Rights
has a rich history of working with the local public schools and the
community to bring awareness and tolerance of diverse cultures to our
community and its schools.
In 2003, after local residents brought incidences of bullying to our attention,
we initiated a project to reduce bullying in Sheridan County public schools.
Drawing from an internationally respected model (Olweus) that had proven
highly successful in other states in the country, we worked with the local
school districts to create a bullying prevention program appropriate to our
schools. We raised approximately $60,000 from local sources (see below) to
hold a series of workshops with national experts to 1) bring awareness of
bullying prevention to the community, 2) train a group of local educators to
be bullying prevention trainers in the schools, and 3) train a group of
local citizens to lead support and accountability circles for those bullied
and for those who bully.
There are trainers available
to provide help for planning and setting up bullying prevention programs
in schools and to provide circles (Trainers
and Circle Training).
We have created this web site to continue to support and provide information on bullying prevention for
all school staff, students, parents, and community leaders. Also, we have
developed a brochure describing bullying prevention resources available at
Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library.
Although our
groundwork is complete, we continue to promote bullying prevention both in
our community and within the state of Wyoming. For more information, please contact us:
